WOMEX 2023

The Greek Delegation

It was our great honour to present the following artists at WOMEX 2023 the artists of the Hellenic delegation supported by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports.

CReNe was hosted at the stands #203 - 204 of the Greek Ministry of Culture from October 25- 29 2023 in A Coruña, Spain.

Our representatives had more than 80 in person meetings promoting the work of the artists of the 2023 delegation, providing networking and collaboration opportunities with business professionals from around the world.

Katerina Papadopoulou
FOLK

Katerina Papadopoulou is a contemporary ambassador of Greek folk music and one of the few living masters of traditional singing. The renowned singer, teacher, and instrument player holds a long career during which she has been demonstrating the nicheness of the musical tradition of Greece and sharing her in-depth knowledge of several local idioms.
She worked closely with Domna Samiou, the ‘saviour’ of Greece’s traditional music, for more than 15 years. Over the last 10 years, she has been working with the renown musician, in the field of Old Music, Jordi Savall, as well as with the Baroque band L ‘Arpeggiata, in concerts and recordings.
Counting more than 50 records in her resume, Katerina, along with the band “Anastatica” presented in March 2021 the album “Anastasis” which gained international recognition and remained at the top of the international charts (World Music Chart, Transglobal World Music Chart).

Giorgis Manolakis
CRETAN MUSIC

Giorgis Manolakis was born in Heraklion Crete in 1982. At the age of eight years old, he began studying the Cretan laouto and six years later the Greek bouzouki. Today he is considered one of the greatest virtuosos of his generation. He has worked with many notable musicians and composers: Ross Daly, Hainides, Naseer Shamma, Psarantonis, Sokratis Malamas, Zohar Fresco and others.
Manolakis does not limit himself to the reproduction of Cretan music but develops it further as he harmoniously blends the sounds and melodies of the musical tradition of Crete with the jazz, the grooves and the music of the west.

Sillyboy's Ghost Relatives
INDIE ROCK

SGR aka Sillyboy's Ghost Relatives is a band project from Athens Greece. Their sound can be described as a distinctive blend of atmospheric guitars retro-pop synths and head-in-the-clouds grooves.

The band under the “Sillyboy’s Ghost Relatives” name is performing together for the last 3 years in various festivals and venues. (Eurosonic Festival, Reeperbahn Festival GE, Arezzo Festival IT, Release Festival GR Up Festival GR. Zero Festival GR, Fengaros Festival CYP) to name a few.

In 2019 the band signed a record deal with the eclectic UK based label Claremont 56. for their album "In A Small Place". Their latest release “Stone Town” feat young rapper Rako is out by Fortune Cut Records (GR) and Very Jazzed Records (US).

The band recently finished their seventh full LP. All the songs were recorded live in a secluded house near the Greek - Bulgarian borders.

Harris Lambrakis Quartet (HLQ)
MODAL JAZZ

Harris Lambrakis Quartet (HLQ) was formed in 2006 in Athens and since then has been performing exclusively original music composed by its members.
The band, with Nikos Sidirokastritis (drums), Dimitris Theocharis (piano), Dimitris Tsekouras (double bass) and Harris Lambrakis (ney) as members, explores the musical landscapes of the East and the West by harmoniously blending the jazz melodies of the ‘60s with Modal jazz, Greek traditional music, and modal music of the East Mediterranean. The result is a musical journey where the audience, together with the band, face the unexpected that cannot be defined but only followed.
HLQ has released three albums, Théa (2010), Metéora (2013) and Lafina (2023).

Evgenios Voulgaris
REBETIKO

Evgenios Voulgaris started his music training in 1985 and today he is considered a master of modal and Rebetiko music. 
A multi-instrumentalist and a singer himself, he has repeatedly teamed with various musicians and composers in concerts, recordings and television productions in Greece and abroad (e.g. Nima ben David, Paul Winter Guenter Baby Sommer, Savina Yannatou, Sokratis Sinopoulos, Dimitris Papadimitriou, Harris Lambrakis). 
Voulgaris has also an extensive teaching career, offering masterclasses and seminars on the oud, yayli tanbur, rebetiko music and makam theory in various institutions, academic departments and music schools in Greece and abroad.

Kostas Sidirokastritis
INDIE ROCK

Kostas Sidirokastritis, is one of the most promising musicians of his generation, a talented singer, songwriter & guitarist that naturally blends various genres led by asnd leading to singing and improvisation.

His music and singing style bring back memories, albeit of the future.

His band is composed by Haris Haralabous (bass), Pantelis Takis (drums) and Andreas Polyzogopoulos (trumpet). Their first album, "First Colour", is on the way and expected to be released soon.

Green Was Greener
POP/ROCK

Greek born and raised Thomas Stratakis, influenced by the nu-psychedelia wave, began his band - project Green Was Greener initially recording everything in his bedroom and later re-recording at the Mad Hat Music studio what would become the bands first record, “Introspective”.

Immediately signed by the Greek label “Inner Ear Records” the album was released in both vinyl / digital in 2021 , grabbing attention across Greece and highly praised by critics, eventually became sold out after a few months. Playing shows and local festivals all over Greece, “Green Was Greener” made a name for themselves. In May 2023, almost 2 years since their debut album was released, Green Was Greener introduced their sophomore album “Love Divine” (Inner Ear Records). A psychedelic Pop / Rock album, inspired by the 80s scene and Dante’s Alighieri “Divine Comedy” that led them to playing alongside “The Hives” and “Arctic Monkeys” at Release Athens Festival.
